The Cimmerian wanderer's transition from roaming adventurer, mercenary, pirate and warrior to ruler of Aquilonia was anything but simple. Conan favoured action over the constraints of the bureaucratic society he was forced to navigate and had to embody, with his wife Queen Zenobia and his son Prince Conn at his side.
Howard's first Conan story, 'The Phoenix on the Sword', introduced Conan as king of Aquilonia, nostalgic for his carefree days of adventure. The story also introduced Thoth-Amon, the Stygian sorcerer whose dark influence would torment the Cimmerian from the shadows. That conspiracy would ultimately lead to divine intervention, blessing Conan's blade with the mark of the phoenix.
If 'The Phoenix on the Sword' represents the beginning of Conan's story as king, 'The Hour of the Dragon' marks the other end of it, and is also the only Conan novel written by Howard. It follows Conan after he has been deposed and introduces Zenobia, a slave destined to become his queen.
